Article 8 — Highlights of Confederations Cup, Tournoi De France, US Cup
This is a special article where there will be lesser words and more highlight videos of Italy’s involvement at 3 separate tournaments, Confederations Cup 2009, 2013, Tournoi De France 1997 and US Cup 1992.
We start with the Confederations Cup. The tournament is a dress rehearsal for the World Cup, it used to be held every 2 years before it changed to every 4 years in 2005. Since then, it has been hosted a year prior to the World Cup by the host nation of the World Cup. It is contested by the champions of the different confederations, UEFA (Europe), CONMEBOL (South America), CONCACAF (North & Central America), AFC (Asia), OFC (Oceania) and the host nation of the World Cup.
Italy contested in 2 editions, one in 2009 and 2013. I have touched on Italy’s participation in both tournaments in Article 6 and 7 respectively. Italy’s best finish was achieved in 2013 where they finished 3rd. The following are the highlights from that tournament.
We start off with Mexico vs Italy in the first group stage match of Confederations Cup 2013
Next, we got a 7 goal thriller between Italy and Japan also in the group stage of the same tournament.
6 goals shared by 5 times World champions Brazil and 4 times World champions Italy. Unfortunately not in Italy’s favour here in the final group stage match of Confederations Cup 2013.
Finally from Confederations Cup 2013, 3rd & 4th Placing between Uruguay and Italy. Italy finished 3rd in the Confederations Cup 2013 after a penalty shootout win.
This is the only highlight from Confederations Cup 2009, the first match of the group stage, USA vs Italy.
Tournoi de France was a friendly international tournament held in 1997 by the hosts of World Cup 1998, France as a dress rehearsal for the main event a year later. France invited Italy, Brazil and England to participate. There were some great players on show, great games, great goals. Italy lost the first game to eventual champions, England.
We start off with this classic 3–3 draw against Brazil.
Finally from this tournament, another entertaining 2–2 draw with the hosts, France.
USA held the U.S. Cup from 1992 for men and women teams to popularise football in view of hosting the World Cup in 1994. Italy was invited to participate in the 1992 tournament.
First, we got Italy’s 2–0 win over Republic of Ireland in their second game of the tournament.
Finally, we got Italy’s 1–1 draw against the hosts, USA.
